No chickens in my yard, but I have a gardening friend with 3 girls who are in the planning stages of getting chickens. We even went to visit a friend who has her chicken coup up and running and the feathered girls all have names! So much fun.

Any domestic chicken variety will be easy to keep in your garden, while yes, some will be louder or a bit more ornery. Cochins, one of the the larger and more heavily feathered multi-purpose birds, would be a great choice for beginners or those who have limited space. They’re docile and friendly and the heavy feathers keep them warmer. We’ve found they lay better in cooler weather so you get a longer laying season.

All sounds great, but chickens/hens can cause havoc in ornamental and fruit/vegetable garden areas, not to mention, the constant cleaning of patio areas.
Can be fun but lots of work associated with these wonderful creatures. IMO Rhode Island reds are leaders when it comes to producing eggs.

I would LOVE to have some chickens in the yard, and especially enjoy the fresh eggs! Alas, I just read in the paper this morning that my city has confirmed the “no chicken” law—so no chickens in the foreseeable future for me…
