Who are you callin’ a hippeastrum?

Okay, okay, you’re an amaryllis!

Cold weather will be here in earnest by Friday and I hope all our homes are full of amaryllis (hippeastrum) bulbs to brighten up the winter of our discontent.

Find them at any garden center or order the super-lovelies from bulb catalogs.

Plant them according to directions at Amaryllis Bulbs or (if you’re feeling metric) The Real Gardener. Enjoy amaryllis adventures at both blogs.

Sue Langley says:

Amaryllis or daffodils planted in a decorative pot make excellent gifts for your friends. My friend gave potted up narcissus bulbs and it was fun to see them bloom in late January. There’s hope for Spring and you don’t have to wait so long!

I agree Sue. But one year when we gave out potted amaryllis a cousin said, “Thanks for the onion!”

After our exchange regarding the picture I ended up going to the store to look at amaryllis bulbs. I didn’t buy anything but I did do a lot of looking. :0)

Toronto CityTV’s program “Cityline,” covered amaryllis this morning. Guest host, Frank Feraggine, said that amaryllis are vastly underrated plants.

He’s right. Gorgeous, sexy plants with very little effort. It’s a perfect bulb for the holidays!

Sally says:

A fine feature is that they multiply through the years. Just plant them in the sun waist deep and then ignore them. Natural Southern Calif. rains will do the rest. Let the summer be dry and they will go dormant. Next time they bloom there will be two of them, then three the next year.
