Nothing can protect a house from wind-borne embers, but a fire that spreads along the ground can be stopped in its tracks by a barrier of succulent plants. Leaves of jade plant (shown here) and aloes are like gel-filled water balloons. They take a long time to catch on fire, and they don’t transmit flames.
