Hawaii helps honeybee collapse research

Hawaii played a part in isolating the Varroa destructor mite, central to the spread of Colony Collapse Disorder. The parasitic mite transfers a virus to honeybees, and the geographic isolation of the Hawaiian Islands made it possible to track the mite in the honeybee population.
