Is it Valentine’s Day?

Happy heart-shaped-flower day!

I’m not sure if I can still call today Valentine’s because so many names seem to be changing. For instance, our pretty friend here, Bleeding heart, used to be known as Dicentra spectabilis but is now Lamprocapnos spectabilis. Eminent garden writer Graham Rice explains all.

whatever

Greensparrow Gardens—-Altered botanical names drive a graduate student into a musical frenzy (to the tune of “Somebody Told Me”).

Very pretty Valentine photo.  To those of us who use and love plants’ Latin names, the name changes, due to new genetic research keeps us on our toes! Who needs memory games to keep our brains limber?

Funny how the scientific name for our native one is staying the same. Dicentra formosa is recognized as correct by updated Jepson and the USDA. (I wonder how long until the genus name cahnge arrives here?) Not a fan of the name changing.

Sue, Yes, it beats a crossword puzzle for mental exercise.

Dan, Interesting that our native is (currently) untouched.
