June 14, 2011DDJ Northern California estivates
Henry Mitchell taught me that word in an essay about peonies. A peony grower in Tennessee was rushed off his feet in the spring, but in summer no one saw him and they wondered if he estivated. New to me: “to spend the summer or a hot, dry season in an inactive state.” I’ll be back, with hort news galore, on June 27.
