August 31, 2010Any friend of Gertrude Jekyll’s…
It’s hard to be an Anglophile gardener in the Sierra Nevada foothills (not enough rain and too many deer). So you can imagine my delight at finding a plausible plant combination by Gertrude Jekyll, the famed English landscape designer.
Barbara Wilde at L’Atelier Vert clued me in to Jekyll’s use of Lespedeza thunbergii (Bush clover) in a Normandy garden. Jekyll placed L. thunbergii so its branches would drape into purple sage. I use a bi-color, magenta and white L. thunbergii and plant it with magenta Autumn sage.
As I enjoy the combination of flowers at this time of year I feel the presence of the Edwardian lady by my side. Maybe she’s keeping the deer away too—they won’t touch it.

Telegraph—-Urban bees do just fine, thank you. In fact their diet is better than their country cousins’.
